Survey of the "Barchessa" East, Villa Savorgnan-Fior, Belvedere d'Aquileia (UD)

A group of architecture students from the Master's programme carried out the survey of a historical Friulian Barchessa from 8 - 12 July 2019 as part of an in-depth work at the Chair of Building Research and Construction History. The students were able to get to know the entire repertoire of different measuring instruments and methods and gain interesting insights into the construction of agricultural buildings.

A few kilometres away from the once important Roman town of Aquileia, at the southern end of the Via Giulia Augusta, is the village of Belvedere d'Aquileia. The local church and the Villa Savorgnan-Fior are the most important buildings of this hamlet, which mainly flourished during the 18th century. The Villa (estate) was built on behalf of the Savorgnan family of Friuli and under the Patriarchate of the Venetian Republic, to manage the flat agricultural landscape surrounding the Marano lagoon. In addition to the main building of the conglomerate, which has grown over several construction phases, the complex includes the two farm buildings locally known as Barchessa. They served as granaries, drying plants for tobacco and material storage facilities for agriculture. Both buildings are still fulfilling their original purpose today. The subject of the survey was the eastern Barchessa, the older of the two symmetrically arranged and externally very similar buildings.
