Start SNSF project on the Basilica of St. Anthony at Padua
From this day on, the research project "The Basilica of Sant' Antonio at Padua - Deciphering the building history of a landmark pilgrimage church" funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation starts at the IDB.
“Il Santo” at Padua is one of the major pilgrimage sites in Italy outside Rome, alongside with Assisi and Loreto. The Portuguese-born saint, Saint Anthony (b. around 1195 and d. 1231) was one of the most important collaborators of Saint Francis, providing the theological foundation of the new Franciscan order. In an outstanding and almost unique process, he was canonized just one year after his death. At the same time, construction of a large basilica on his burial site outside of the walls of Padua began. This Latin-cross shaped church is characterized by its impressive arrangement of six domes, plus an Eastern extension with a presbytery crowned by yet another dome and encircled by a wide ambulatory with radiating chapels.
