Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan M. Holzer's new book "Der Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal" has been published by the German Engineer Chambers and is now available.
Built in 1836-1847, the Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal was the largest and most important hydraulic engineering project in the German-speaking world during the period of the beginning industrialisation. Already understood by contemporaries as a "European project", experiences from one hundred and fifty years of canal construction throughout Europe, above all from France and England, flowed into his planning. Since the canal could only be opened on the threshold of the railway age, it never attained the significance intended for it and is therefore still today in its still existing sections almost unchanged in its original condition, which makes it a particularly important technical monument.
